Jay Woodcroft and John Chayka are no longer moving on the same track in Toronto's coaching search.

That is the clearest takeaway from the latest update around the Maple Leafs.

For a while, Woodcroft felt like one of the names that made too much sense to ignore. He had NHL head coaching experience, a strong offensive reputation, and the kind of profile people assumed would at least earn a serious interview.

Now that assumption looks off.

The Leafs reportedly have not even requested permission to speak with him.

That matters because it is not the same as losing out on a candidate. It means Toronto may never have put him near the front of the line in the first place.

And if that is true, this search is telling us something.

It is telling us Chayka's list may look very different from the one people built outside the organization.

«I've just heard Toronto has not asked permission to talk to him, and right now, he's not on their list of people to interview.»

«They may not at all. That's where it stands right now.»

Elliotte Friedman just confirmed what Leafs fans feared about the coaching search

That is where this gets interesting.

Elliotte Friedman made it clear he is not trying to bury Woodcroft here. He simply said Toronto has not asked for permission to talk to him and that, right now, he is not on their interview list.

That is a strong signal.

«Woodcroft has previous head coaching experience, posting a 79-41-13 cumulative record with the Edmonton Oilers before he was dismissed midway through the 2023-24 campaign.»

- Arun Srinivasan, The Leafs Nation

Woodcroft's résumé is not light.

So if the Leafs are passing on that background, they are doing it on purpose.

That points back to the bigger shape of the search.

Toronto already has been linked to David Carle, Derek Lalonde, Mike van Ryn, and other names with different styles and different levels of NHL experience. The common thread seems to be fit, not fame.

That is why Woodcroft being left off matters.

It does not say he cannot coach.

It says the Leafs may be looking for something else.

Maybe they want a different voice.

Maybe they want a different personality.

Maybe they simply do not see him as the best match for this room and this market.

Whatever the reason, one thing is clear now.

A name many fans treated like a top option is not even in the interview lane at this point.

And in a coaching search this wide, that is the kind of detail that says a lot.
