The score matters. So does the way the night ended.
Montreal now leads the series 3-2 after digging out of an ugly start in Buffalo. Then, once the buzzer hit, Canadiens fans took over the building with a loud round of Ole, Ole, Ole that echoed through the stands.
-
That's the image sticking to this game. Not just the comeback, but the sound of road fans drowning out a home crowd in a playoff building that should have belonged to Buffalo.
-
The Sabres came out flying and landed 3 goals on their first 4 shots. For a few minutes, it looked like the Canadiens were about to get buried early.
Instead, Montreal settled down and pushed right back. Dobes absorbed the early hit, the skaters cleaned up in front of him, and the Canadiens answered with 6 goals.
Nick Suzuki led that charge with 3 points, including 1 goal, and once Montreal found its legs, Buffalo never really grabbed the game again.
Lane Hutson chipped in with 2 assists and kept play moving from the blue line. Juraj Slafkovsky added 3 assists, and Montreal's top group kept forcing Buffalo into chase mode.
That's what made the postgame scene even louder. Canadiens fans in blue, white, and red stayed in place and sang while Sabres supporters started filing out.
It wasn't just playful noise by the end. The mood around the exits looked heated, and some Sabres fans appeared ready for a confrontation in the parking lot as frustration spilled past the arena doors.
That part matters too. Buffalo didn't just lose control of Game 5 on the ice. It looked like the whole night slipped away, right down to the final walk out of the building.
-
Now the pressure is absolute. The Sabres have to win 2 straight to stay alive, and the next stop is the Bell Centre.
That's a brutal spot for Buffalo. Montreal is coming home with momentum, its captain is driving the attack, and its fans already made themselves heard on enemy ice.
If Game 5 was the swing game, the last few minutes made it feel even bigger. The Canadiens took the scoreboard, the crowd, and the final word.
