Evan Gold and Adam Foote are still waiting as Vancouver's front-office search takes another turn.

That is the clean read after Elliotte Friedman pushed back on the rush around Gold Monday. Reports started flying that Gold was set to become the new general manager, but Friedman said what he heard was simple: it is premature.

That one word matters. Premature does not mean Gold is out. It means Vancouver has not crossed the line yet, and people got ahead of the process.

And that is where this gets more interesting for the Canucks. This is not only about Gold and Ryan Johnson anymore.

Friedman also said he thinks the Sedins could have an important role in all of this, if they decide to accept. That adds a whole new layer to the search because it suggests Vancouver may be looking at a bigger hockey operations shift, not just a GM hire.

He went even further on that point. Friedman said he believes the Canucks have asked the Sedins if they want to take on more responsibility, even if the exact titles are not clear yet.

That changes the temperature of the story right away. When Daniel and Henrik Sedin start hovering around a bigger role, the organization stops looking like it is only filling one office.

Elliotte Friedman: Re Canucks: There were reports earlier Monday about Evan Gold being the new GM, all I was told about that was it's premature - NHL Tonight (5/11)

That is why the Evan Gold chatter had to be cooled off. If the Sedins are still deciding how much they want on their plate, then Vancouver is not only choosing a general manager. It may also be deciding how the next version of the front office is going to function.

Elliotte Friedman: Re Canucks management search: I know a lot of us have been talking about Evan Gold and Ryan Johnson, but I think the Sedins' role in this could be important, if they decide to accept - 32 Thoughts (5/11)

Gold is still a real name here. So is Ryan Johnson. Friedman made that clear too when he said a lot of the talk has centered on those two candidates.

But the Sedin angle makes this less straightforward than a normal shortlist. If they step in more formally, they immediately become part of the decision-making balance around whoever gets hired.

That matters for Foote too. The head coach is already in place, and the next front-office setup is going to shape how much alignment he gets above him.

Elliotte Friedman: I do think the Canucks have asked the Sedins if they want to take more of a role; I don't know what the titles would be...but I do believe they have talked; they were pondering the idea - 32 Thoughts (5/11)

So the smooth read here is this: Gold may still be alive, Johnson may still be alive, but Vancouver's search is not done enough for anyone to declare a winner.

Right now, the Canucks look like a team trying to finish more than one decision at once. And until the Sedins decide what they want, the whole thing stays open.
