On Friday morning, the great Henrik Lundqvist, who suited up for 887 games over 15 seasons with the New York Rangers, announced he was retiring.

This announcement came as somewhat of a surprise given that it seemed the 39-year-old was hinting a comeback last week on his Twitter feed. However, after being forced to miss the entire 2019-20 season after requiring open heart surgery, this decision was probably for the best.

With the news of his retirement, many were quick to give respect for the 2011-12 Vezina Trophy winner, including another former elite NHL netminder in Roberto Luongo.

«Congrats on an incredible career!» Luongo wrote in a tweet. «I always remember getting a little extra amped up when I knew you were in the crease at the other end!»

That was a nice touch from Luongo, but of course, as he always seems to do, he followed it up with some humor in another tweet just a few short minutes later, poking fun at himself and Lundqvist for never winning a Stanley Cup.

«Two GOATS no Cup podcast???» Luongo said. «Think about it.»

As the day goes on, you can expect to hear far more tributes from former teammates of Lundqvist. Despite never winning a Cup, he is a sure fire Hall-of-Famer who for years was regarded as one of, if not the best, goaltenders in the entire NHL. We wish him all the best in retirement.
