The NHL's board of governors, comprised of owners of the league's teams, has officially approved jersey ads. However, the change will not be immediate.

According to a report by Sportico.com, the ads will start appearing at the beginning of the 2022-23 season. A memo sent to teams this week stated they are free to start negotiating with potential sponsors now.

"The ads must fit a rectangle 3 inches by 3.5 inches, making them slightly bigger than the patches that the NBA added to its jerseys for the 2017-18 season," said Sportico's report.

These won't be the first advertisement to appear on NHL players. The league allowed helmet ads starting last season. The NHL is attempting to recover lost revenue from the shutdown of the league in 2020, and the subsequent "bubble" playoffs, which were held without fans in attendance.

Like most changes, a lot of fans won't be overly enthused about this one. However, after a few weeks, it will likely be unnoticeable.
