Tom Kuhnhackl, who won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins, has left the NHL for a contract in Europe. The German-born player has signed a deal with Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). According to the club's website, it's a two-year deal.

Kuhnhackl, a former fourth-round draft pick of the Penguins in 2010, has spent most of the last two seasons playing for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL, the farm team for the New York Islanders. He signed with the Islanders in 2018 as a free agent after Pittsburgh decided not to make him a qualifying offer as a restricted free agent. The forward has played a total of 232 games in the NHL, scoring 18 goals and 54 points.

"I'm really excited going over and meeting the team," said Kuhnhackl. "It feels incredibly exciting as I have only heard good things about the league and the club in particular."

"I was lucky in the NHL by getting the chance in such good clubs as the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders," Kuhnhackl added. "That was a more defensive role as I was reliable in my own zone, strong in box play, blocked a lot of shots etc. I did not get the opportunity to contribute so much offensively so here I want to lift that game and help the team across the field."
