I'll preface all this by saying goaltender Mike Smith had an excellent year with the Edmonton Oilers in 2020-21. His 21-6-2 record with a 2.31 goals against average and .931 save percentage were fanstic for a 39-year-old playing on a team that isn't exactly known for its defensive prowess. That said, reports state the Oilers are getting set to re-sign Smith to a surprising deal.

Several reports state that once the current roster freeze lifts on Thursday, Edmonton will re-sign Smith, a pending unrestricted free agent, to a two year deal worth $2 million per season.

Smith definitely earned another shot between the pipes with Edmonton, but signing a 39-year-old goaltender to a two-year deal seems like a risk that not many teams would take. And, if Edmonton's defence was mediocre at best last season, there's word Oscar Klefbom will miss all of 2021-22 (if he ever returns to play again), while fellow blueliner Adam Larsson just signed a new four-year deal with the Seattle Kraken. The only addition to the Oilers' blueline so far for next season has been Duncan Keith from Chicago. Adding Keith meant the loss of young D prospect Caleb Jones.
