Hockey analyst Scott Wheeler, in a 'The Athletic' article, has caused controversy by labeling Marie-Philip Poulin, not Sidney Crosby, Canada's all-time great to play for the national team.
The accomplishments of Poulin add up to 52 goals and 112 points in 87 games (1.29 points per game) playing for Team Canada.
She won three Olympic gold medals, four titles in the IIHF World Championships, and was twice Most Valuable Player of the IIHF World Championships.
She also boasts a ratio of gold medals won of 0.44 per tourney, having won seven of her 16 tournaments playing overseas.
Crosby, on the other hand, has 20 goals and 50 points in 38 games (1.31 points per game) playing for Team Canada.
His accomplishments consist of two Olympic gold medals, one IIHF World Championship gold, one World Cup of Hockey gold, and a World Cup Most Valuable Player honor.
He has fewer tournaments in his portfolio, but his ratio of gold medals won is a solid .80, having won four of five events.
On the day after the first game of the 4 Nations Face-Off, 'The Hockey News' columnist Ian Kennedy berated Team Canada coach Jon Cooper for dismissing Poulin's legacy when he called Crosby Canada's all-time great player.
Kennedy argued that Cooper's declaration trumped and canceled Canada's actual national team GOAT, Poulin.
Today, both Wheeler and Kennedy are in trouble online: Wheeler for suggesting that Crosby is not Canada's great one, and Kennedy for implying that Cooper was diminishing the achievements of women.
What was a harmless hockey debate, in the beginning, is already turning into a smoldering controversy.
