Tampa Bay Lightning Place Player on Waivers Hours After Signing Him
The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed veteran goalie Brandon Halverson on waivers today after calling him up to the NHL.
A few days ago, the Tampa Bay Lighting signed goaltender Brandon Halverson to a two-year NHL contract.
The 28-year-old has spent the season so far on an AHL deal with the Syracuse crunch, but has been one of the best netminders in the league, earning an All-Star game appearance.
In 26 games with the Crunch he has a 12-7-10 record, a 2.20 goals-against-average, and a .918 save percentage.
With Lightning backup goalie Jonas Johansson questionable for tonight's game, the Lightning had recalled Halverson, but it now appears as though he will not get into a game just yet.
The team announced this morning that they have placed him on waivers, presumably with the intention of returning him to the Crunch.
This would indicate that Johansson is available to backup tonight, but Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to make the start regardless.
Halverson has just one game of NHL experience, a relief appearance for the New York Rangers during the 2017-18 season in which he stopped 5 of 6 shots in less than 13 minutes of ice time.
Since then he has continued to grind away in the AHL and ECHL, hoping to earn a proper chance in the NHL.
Now that he has an NHL contract for the remainder of the season and next season we can expect him to get a shot at some point.
Perhaps the Lightning will give him a shot to earn the backup role next season as Jonas Johansson is on an expiring deal.
Either way, Halverson's journey to the NHL proves that hard work and dedication can get you where you want, even if it takes longer than it does for most. It is a feel-good story and one that should be celebrated.
