The Carolina Hurricanes executed a blockbuster trade, getting superstar Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche and Taylor Hall of the Chicago Blackhawks. As an added bonus, they gained the rights to forward Nils Juntorp.
The Avalanche, in return, acquired forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury, a 2025 NHL second-round selection, and a 2026 fourth-round selection from Carolina.
The Blackhawks, in a somewhat surprising move, received a 2025 third-round selection that was initially theirs.
That selection could become important, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet surmised, in case of an impending offer sheet submission by Chicago. The Blackhawks retained 50 percent of Rantanen's $9.25 million salary cap hit in terms of the agreement, too.
The agreement was confirmed following a series of reports from high-profile insiders.
Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff initially broke the report of getting Rantanen to Carolina, and Pierre LeBrun of TSN first mentioned a three-team agreement and included Hall's presence in the deal and a third-rounder going to the Blackhawks.
Arthur Staple of the Athletic and Sara Civian of Bleacher Report included Necas in the trade going to Colorado.
