The Hurricanes made blockbuster deals Friday night, trading for superstar winger Mikko Rantanen of the Colorado Avalanche and Taylor Hall in a three-team trade with the Chicago Blackhawks.
The Avalanche acquired centers Martin Necas and Jack Drury, and Carolina's 2025 second-round and 2026 fourth-round picks in the transaction. Chicago received a third-round selection and took on 50% of Rantanen's $9.25M cap hit.
The move ends a ten-year stint with the Avalanche and sets Carolina in a position to become a top Stanley Cup competitor.
The move surprised Rantanen, according to reports. Colorado hadn't negotiated with him for months and he questioned whether the move was part of a larger scheme for a player who's been a fixture in Colorado's lineup for a decade.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reports no current contract extension for Mikko Rantanen is in place. Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos had reported Colorado presented an eight-year, $90M offer early in the season, but it wasn't a completed offer.
A 10th overall pick in 2015, Rantanen's been a stalwart for Colorado and helped them win the 2022 Stanley Cup. In 49 games this season, he's totaled 25 goals, 39 assists, and 64 points.
