A Houston Texans player was just fined for calling out officiating bias toward the Kansas City Chiefs, and he claims he never made those comments.
A running back for the Houston Texans and his agent, Peter Schaffer, said he was fined $25,000 by the league for a comment he never made. That fine came after the Texans lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round.
Joe Mixon is mind-blown that he was wrongfully fined
"I'm getting fined by the nfl for what someone else said. What's next? I get fined by them for Connor McDavid cross checking an opponent on a nhl game!" Mixon posted on social media Wednesday. Mixon was asked about officiating in a postgame interview in reference to two penalties called against the Texans' defense for contact with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
"Everybody knows how it is playing up here. You can never leave it into the refs' hands," Mixon said. "The whole world sees, man, what it is. When it comes down to it, you can never leave it into the refs' hands. It's all good, though."
The calls extended Kansas City's drives and accounted for 10 key points in their 23-14 victory.
Former Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh had spoken his mind about the officiating, which was then doctored as a quote by 'Sports Illustrated' and attributed to Mixon.
"Why play the game if every 50/50 call goes with the Chiefs. These officials are [trash] & bias."
- T.J. Houshmandzadeh
According to Schaffer, the NFL took that misquoted "50/50" comment and used that alone as justification for fining Mixon. Schaffer told ESPN they will appeal the fine.
"We will defend Joe and have appealed the fine and will explore all other legal avenues to rectify this situation," Schaffer said. "This has to stop."
Whether the NFL realizes their mistake and rescinds the fine remains to be seen.
