Can Newton is a household name for fans of the NFL.
The quarterback spent a decade in the league playing primarily for the Carolina Panthers where he won numerous accolades including an AP MVP, AP offensive rookie of the year, and many more.
Sadly, Newton never lead his Panthers to a Super Bowl victory, but he did lead the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 where they lost to the Denver Broncos.
Now, the eccentric Quarterback appears to be looking for sympathy as he struggles transitioning back into a 'normal' life without his NFL salary.
Specifically, he points to his eight children, saying he is sad he can't be 'Superman' to them anymore.
Notably, Newton earned 133 million USD in his playing career.
Granted, much of that goes to agent fees and taxes, but it is still an unimaginable amount of money for your average NFL fan.
As a result, few fans are feeling sympathetic to his plight. If anything, they are mocking him for this statement.
Several fans pointed out that it is his responsibility to manage his money properly for retirement.
After all, even if his actual take-home pay was only 40 million, less than a third of his total earnings, that is far more than enough to live comfortably on for an entire lifetime, even with eight children.
One fan pointed to fellow former NFL star Rob Gronkowski, noting how he has been financially responsible throughout his career and into retirement so he has plenty of money for himself and the generations to come in his family.
So does Cam Newton really deserve any sympathy for his financial 'troubles?' Be the judge for yourself.
