10 years after being drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning at the 19th overall pick, Tony DeAngelo surprisingly decided to leave the NHL to sign a contract in the KHL with the St. Petersburg SKA.
However, earlier today, the SKA announced the end of their association with DeAngelo, as they mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
According to the organization's official press release posted on X, the veteran defenseman had to return to North America to attend to a family matter.
Check out their statement:
This comes only a few days after he was Tony DeAngelo surprisingly healthy scratched from the lineup of the St. Petersburg SKA in a controversial decision by head coach Roman Rotenberg to leave the NHL to sign a contract in the KHL with the St. Petersburg SKA.
After failing to fulfill his responsibilities yet again, it's unclear if the player will return to the NHL. It was noted by an analyst that he is a "zero defensively".
For that to happen, a team would need to sign him to a contract despite all the controversies surrounding him.
However, it could still happen, as DeAngelo's talent could tip the scales in his favor. Many organizations across the National Hockey League would love to add a talented defenseman with a cheap contract to their roster ahead of the playoffs.
That said, signing him would come with risks. DeAngelo has had issues in the past, including multiple locker-room conflicts.
Still, his numbers speak for themselves. In 371 NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Carolina Hurricanes, and Philadelphia Flyers, DeAngelo scored 210 points, including 48 goals.
He added 13 points, including one goal, in 26 playoff games.
