Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Mitch Marner is under fire this morning after he made some questionable comments post-game last night.

The Leafs fell to the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 last night as Canucks netminder Kevin Lankinen picked up his fourth shutout of the season in Toronto.

It was just a poor, sloppy performance for the Leafs, who looked like the more tired team despite having more rest than the visitors.

It was obvious to many in the building and at home that the home team did not give their best effort in the game.

However, when he was asked about it post-game, Leafs superstar Mitch Marner said he thought he really liked their game and didn't seem to have an issue with the effort level.

"I liked it. I thought we played well, I really did. The last couple of games, we've been giving up plays to teams that aren't missing on them."

This comment is in direct contradiction with Leafs head coach Craig Berube, who correctly noted that he did not, in fact, like his team's effort level in the shutout loss.

Most Leafs fans seem to be with Berube on this one. After all, it is hard to defend your team getting shutout at home, especially when they have a rest advantage over the other team.

This is the latest in a trend for Marner. He has always been a player scrutinized for his effort level.

For example, he was heavily criticized last year for the overtime goal in game seven that ended the Leafs season.

Now, Marner remains a hold out as the Leafs attempt to re-sign him.

Since he is on an expiring contract, he has been the Leafs top priority all season long, but at this point it appears likely that the organization will head into the playoffs without him secured for the future.

In fact, Marner has reportedly already refused at least one contract offer from the team.

Hopefully this move does not backfire for Marner, but if it does, many Leafs fans will likely have little sympathy for him.
