They may have gotten the win, but New York Islanders coach Patrick Roy says his players left their goaltender high and dry in a game against the Chicago Blackhawks

For a team struggling like the New York Islanders, you would think a win would make head coach Patrick Roy happy.

It's pretty clear things aren't great on Long Island, as a recent Patrick Roy interview exposed tensions between him and GM Lou Lamoriello, but even the 5-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks wasn't enough to put Roy in a better mood. \

The NHL goaltending legend was livid with his team after they were up 5-1 in the second half of the third period, and then left goaltender Ilya Sorokin all by himself to barely hang on for the 5-4 win.

Roy insisted his goaltender deserved better, and seethed over their performance while at the microphone.

""I guess times have changed. Because in my day, if my team had done that to me, I would break a stick in that room. I would have been very upset to see my team playing like this in front of me. Ilya is a gentleman, he's a first-class person, but that was unacceptable. We talked about it this morning, to be stronger. Our goalie deserves more respect than this."

He added this type of play cannot continue, and put his players on notice that it can't happen again.

"We can't play like this. It doesn't matter where we are or what the score [is], Up, or down, it doesn't matter. We got to be better in front of our net, protecting our goalie."

Anyone who followed Patrick Roy's playing and coaching career knows that he's prone to outbursts, but this one was different. While he didn't yell, you could tell he was trying to hold down the anger that was simmering in him.

There has been plenty of speculation that Roy's job is on the line as the New York Islanders continue to struggle in the 2024-25 season, but that won't stop him from holding his team accountable for their actions.
