The Minnesota Wild have stunned NHL fans across the continent after, in just one year, they have lifted themselves from the 30th in the league to 2nd, closing in quickly on the Winnipeg Jets' tail.
Despite their recent successes, Minnesota was met with another obstacle in their recent game against their bottom-dwelling Central Division rivals the Chicago Blackhawks, yet not from the skaters themselves.
The Wild were up 3-2 in the final minutes of regulation, when an intended pass wound up down the ice, allowing 33-year-old forward Marcus Foligno to catch a rebound and sink an empty-netter.
Despite being the first to the puck, game officials whistled the play down for icing, thus squashing Foligno's chance to earn a second point, and Minnesota's to take a two-goal lead.
After what has been almost universally agreed as an outrageously bad call, Marcus Foligno could not hide his anger, mouthing apparent expletives amidst the uproar of fans in the stadium.
Despite the Minnesota forward's clear shock, in this era of increased reffing critique, Friday's game has left fans another unsurprising example to bring to the league's doorstep.
Yet, even with growing complaints over linesmen's quality and the lack of review, the NHL has not seemed to make any substantial changes, if any positive.
While the Wild were lucky enough to keep their lead against Chicago, their win will less likely highlight the issue than brush it under the rug.
Minnesota plays against the Nashville Predators next, taking place this evening at the Xcel Energy Center.
As they try to tie and pass the leading Winnipeg Jets in the standings, hopefully, the Minnesota Wild can avoid a similarly bad call in their next game.
