For months now, fans in Pittsburgh have been worried about the future of the team, with the career's of their star trio; Sidney Crosby, Kristopher Letang and Evgeni Malkin are all clearly coming to an end. However, Crosby of all three still has plenty of gas left in the tank, with the 36-year old tallying an impressive 42 goals and 94 points a season ago, despite the team missing the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Now, there's been a very positive update on his potential extension, with speculation swirling around the potential for months, with No. 87 himself confirming optimism that something may be done very soon.
He ends the quote by saying he doesn't know what day specifically it's going to get done, but that he is "pretty optimistic" another deal is happening, which will likely keep the captain in Pittsburgh for the remainder of his career. While some fans want the team to start fresh and build for the future, there's no denying that Crosby is an all-time great in Pittsburgh, and after bringing the team three Stanley Cup's, he has more than earned the right to stay as long as he wants.
Over his tenure with Pittsburgh, Crosby has played in 1,272 regular season games, tallying 592 goals and 1,596 points over that stretch, and if he can play at a high level for another few years, he will no doubt cement himself as a top-10 or potentially top-five player in NHL history. For now though, we will just have to wait and see whether or not a deal can get done before the 2024/25 regular season officially begins.
