The Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin joined an overseas league to pursue his hockey career during his six-month suspension from the NHL.
Nichushkin made headlines for all the wrong reasons during the playoffs. He was one of the best players for the Avs, scoring 10 goals in eight games against the Winnipeg Jets and the Dallas Stars, but went from hero to zero after failing a drug test during an intermission.
As he serves his massive suspension in the NHL, he decided to pursue his career in Russia's Media Hockey League:
"Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin will participate in the second season of the Hockey Media League. This was announced to TASS by Nikolai Osipov, President of the Media League, at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
"The second season of the league will start on July 6 and will end on August 31," said Osipov. "The matches will take place in Moscow, but we plan to hold some games in other regions. Among NHL players, it is certain that Valeri Nichushkin will play."
While it'll be hard to repair what was broken with his team, the general manager Chris MacFarland revealed in his end-of-season press conference that Nichushkin should get his job back with the Avalanche when his suspension ends in November:
"It is very plausible he'll be back with the Avalanche"
- Chris MacFarland on Val Nichushkin
"MacFarland said it's going to be up to Nichushkin to rebuild trust with the organization.
"We've looked at all options, like we always do, and the obvious question is termination, right? And that's not an option."
Do you think the Colorado Avalanche would make a mistake by taking back Valeri Nichushkin after his suspension?
