Mikko Rantanen got injured by a dirty hit from the defenseman Mattias Ekholm, last night in a game between the Colorado Avalanche and the Edmonton Oilers.

Two of the top teams in the Western Conference battled on the ice yesterday, and fans got to see two Art-Ross candidates facing off against each other: Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon.

But let's not forget Cale Makar, Leon Draisaitl and Mikko Rantanen, who competed fiercely, in what looked a lot like an All-Star game.

Unfortunately, Rantanen had to leave the game early in the second period after a hit from Mattias Ekholm.

Ekholm sends Rantanen to the locker room after dangerous hit

Rantanen was waiting for the puck and when he finally got it, Ekholm was right behind him and laid a big hit. He was slow to get back on his feet, and when he did, needed help to het back to the bench. He ended up going to the locker room and leaving the game. As for Ekholm, he received no penalty and Jack Johnson, who stepped up for Rantanen, got a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct.

"Mattias Ekholm lands a big hit on Mikko Rantanen, who has now left the game."

Rantanen, who had an amazing season once again, by scoring 102 points in 77 games, could unfortunately miss some time. This close to the playoffs, injuries can be devastating for any organizations, even top teams.

Jared Bednar confirmed he'd be away "for awhile".

More to come.
