Oilers forward Zach Hyman addressed the media about what it was like leaving the Leafs in free agency ahead of Edmonton's game against them tonight. He made a shocking revelation about the process.

Hyman never wanted to leave Toronto Maple Leafs

According to the winger himself, he never want to leave the Maple Leafs. In fact, he waited until the last possible moment to leave the team in hopes that the Leafs would make him a serious contract offer.

Zach Hyman on leaving Leafs in free agency:

"When I was going through the process, I didn't look at any other teams beside Toronto until I knew that that door was closed & didn't have much of a choice with regards to that door."

The Oilers forward continued the interview by discussing his difficult path he has taken throughout his NHL career. It seems as though he has taken this opportunity to rub it in the Leafs' face. He referenced how people didn't believe in him, possibly hinting at individuals within the Leafs organization.

Zach Hyman: "I haven't had the easiest journey in the sense that I was never the best player on my team & nobody thought I would continue to progress, so just continue to hit little milestones & continue to work really hard & just believe in yourself."

Hyman suddenly one of the best value players in the NHL

Hyman is well within his right to do so. After all, the Oilers gamble with him has paid off in the big way. Zach Hyman has had a career year, well on pace for more than 50 goals with the Oilers this season. He signed a seven-year deal with the Oilers in the summer of 2021 that comes with a cap hit of just 5.5 million dollars a season. His current level of play makes the deal one of the best in the entire NHL.

We're talking about how letting #LetsGoOilers forward Zach Hyman go to free agency could be seen as the biggest #LeafsForever mistake in years.

The Maple Leafs could very well get the last laugh though. At least they can today as the team has taken a 2-0 lead into the second period. Be sure to tune in to see if Hyman is able to get some revenge on the ice.
