This afternoon reports are coming in that a sought-after CHL free agent has turned down a contract with an NHL organization. The player in question feels he is not being valued enough by the NHL and its teams.

Undrafted Free Agent Reportedly Turns Down Contract

Recently a report has come out regarding the future of Sherbrooke Phoenix forward Israel Mianscum. Mianscum has been on several NHL teams' radars to add for the future. The New Jersey Devils even offered him a two-way contract between the AHL and ECHL. However, Mianscum has turned that deal down and believes he deserves an NHL opportunity.

With Mianscum hoping for an NHL deal he will likely have to wait into the summer for teams to evaluate where their prospect system is at. If a team feels a weakness at forward he could get an opportunity to sign the NHL deal he covets.

Will Mianscum Receive An NHL Rookie Deal?

While it is tough to definitively say whether or not Mianscum will be offered a rookie contract by an NHL team one can always speculate.

Mianscum this season has played 60 games in the QMJHL. During that time he has 85 points including 34 goals. This is the second season that Mianscum has eclipsed the 30-goal mark. These numbers in isolation do potentially indicate a good player who is a late bloomer.

While Mianscum has stood out in the QMJHL the lack of prestige in his other junior seasons could give some teams doubt. If a team that needs forwards in their system believes in Mianscum's goal-scoring and late-bloomer development he may get his NHL entry-level contract.
