Alex Ovechkin is currently trying to surpass Wayne Gretzky for the most goals of all time in NHL history, and has struggled so far this season with 11 goals in 50 games. But today, the great 8 has beat Gretzky in regards to another goal stat!

Ovechkin passes Gretzky for most empty net goals

The Washington Capitals were hosted by the Boston Bruins today for a late afternoon tilt at TD Garden. The Capitals ended up winning the game 3-0 thanks to goals from TJ Oshie, Dylan Strome and empty netter from Alex Ovechkin! With that empty netter, it puts Ovechkin passed Gretzky and top of the NHL for most empty net goals of all time with a whooping 57! Amazing stat and maybe he'll even break Gretzky's NHL goal record eventually!
