Some sad news to report on Sunday as the Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that former captain, and Hockey Hall of Famer George Armstrong has passed away at the age of 90.
Armstrong spent parts of 21 seasons in the NHL with the Maple Leafs, 11 of which he was captain for. In 1,187 regular season games, he had 713 points (296 G, 417 A), 721 penalty minutes, and was a +15. In 110 career playoff games, Armstrong tallied 60 points (26 G, 34 A), and 52 penalty minutes. He won, and captained the Maple Leafs to four Stanley Cups in the 1960s including Toronto's last win in 1967.
Armstrong went on to spend nearly 75 year within the Maple Leafs organization as a scout, head coach, assistant general manager, and ambassador.
In 1975, Armstrong was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, and had his number 10 honoured by the club in 1998, before being officially retired in 2016.
"George is part of the very fabric of the Toronto Maple Leaf organization and will be deeply missed," said Toronto Maple Leafs President & Alternate Governor Brendan Shanahan. "A proud yet humble man, he loved being a Maple Leaf but never sought the spotlight even though no player played more games for Toronto or captained the team longer. Always one to celebrate his teammates rather than himself, George couldn't even bring himself to deliver his speech the day he was immortalized on Legends Row."
