Per TSN's Pierre LeBrun, goaltender Aaron Dell, who was placed on waivers by the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday, has been claimed by the New Jersey Devils.
Dell, 31, signed a one-year deal with the Maple Leafs this offseason after spending the first four seasons of his NHL career with the San Jose Sharks. Last season saw him appear in a career high 33 games, posting a 3.01 goals against average (GAA) along with a .907 save percentage (SV%) and a 12-15-3 record. While those numbers don't look overly impressive, the team in front of him struggled plenty last season. His goaltending partner Martin Jones fared no better, posting a 3.00 GAA and a .896 SV% in 41 games.
The Devils claiming Dell is not a surprise, given that Corey Crawford, who they signed as a free agent this summer, recently decided to call it a career. As a result, it left the Devils with limited options behind starting goalie Mackenzie Blackwood. Having Dell will allow the Devils coaching staff to rest the 24-year-old Blackwood when needed.
Jason Spezza, who was also put on waivers by the Leafs Sunday, has cleared and remains with the team.
