It's a new season for the Detroit Red Wings and the team and its fans are hoping it will be better than the dismal showing in 2019-20. Unfortunately, one of the team's key signings during the offseason will not be making it to the season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Wings have released their opening night lineup and free agent signing Bobby Ryan is not listed anywhere. The team has not said exactly what is wrong with him, but he was spotted in practice on Wednesday sporting a no-contact jersey. How much time he will miss is a mystery at this point.
Ryan signed a one-year deal with Detroit after being bought out of the final two years remaining on his deal with the Ottawa Senators. He missed a large portion of last season after admitting to alcohol addiction and seeking treatment through an NHL/NHLPA sponsored program. He would return to Ottawa on February 27th and scored a hattrick, something he received a standing ovation for from the fans. Shortly after, the NHL would suspend play due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ryan failed to ever live up to the $7.25 million per year contract he signed with Ottawa, but should look much better under a $1 million deal once he returns to Detroit's lineup.
