It appears as though New York Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo, who is no stranger to controversy, has once again disabled his social media accounts on Friday.
DeAngelo, a vocal Trump supporter, took to Instagram late Friday evening, after removing himself from Twitter, to inform his followers that he would be taking a break from all social media apps until Parler - a social networking service that was shut down after being used by protestors to organize the Capitol Building invasion in Washington D.C. earlier this week - is back up and running.
The "free-speech" social network claims to be unbiased, and had 4 million active users and approximately 10 million total users as recorded in late 2020 prior to being shut down.
DeAngelo, 25, claims that his plan is to avoid all social media, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram until such a time when Parler resumes its services, at which point he will make the app his primary means of communicating with his supporters.
The move comes after President Trump's Twitter account had been permanently suspended due to the potential threat of continued acts of violence and senseless destruction, such as the despicable behaviour exhibited by Trump supporters at the US Capitol this week.
DeAngelo signed a two-year contract with the Rangers in October 2020, keeping him in New York through 2021-22 at a $4.8M AAV.
