Last August, at the beginning of the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, Matt Dumba of the Minnesota Wild did something that had never been done in the NHL before. The 26-year-old became the first NHLer to kneel for the American national anthem after delivering a powerful speech regarding racism and social justice. Dumba apparently paid a price for his actions.
In an interview with Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press, Dumba said he tried to get his car shipped to Arizona down to Arizona during the summer, but the company he called refused to deal with him.
"The guys started saying some racist s--t to me on the phone and saying that I should keep kneeling for my anthem and didn't ship my car down," he told Mizutani.
Dumba added two valets at his apartment building heard his story and jumped in his car and drove it down to Arizona.
""There's going to be those haters. I've got too many good people around me that support everything I'm doing," added Dumba. "It don't faze me."
Dumba is a former seventh overall pick of the Minnesota Wild (2012). He has represented Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships, winning bronze in 2012, as well as the World Championships, where he won gold in 2016.
