In Sweden's 5th Tier Hockey League, an insane play went viral that saw a player lay a huge body check on an unsuspecting referee. The referee was severely injured on the play and had to be taken to the hospital. It was later determined that he had broken his arm.
The player initially claimed that the play was an accident and that he mistook the referee for his opponent and followed through on his hit. There was initially no penalty on the play.
Despite his claims that the hit was an accident, the player has received a significant punishment for his hit on the referee. He will be suspended indefinitely until the league holds a hearing on the incident.
Hopefully, the referee will have a speedy recovery and the player will learn from his mistake, accidental or not.
