Anaheim Ducks forced to lay off significant amount of staff

According to Anaheim Ducks reporter Eric Stephens, the Ducks ownership was forced to announce job cuts on Tuesday.

Stephens says that the cuts, non-surprisingly, were due to a loss of revenue due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a spokesman for the team, it involves less than 15% of full-time employees across Samuelis business enterprise, which includes the Ducks as well as the AHL's San Diego Gulls and The Rinks. The Ducks went on to release the following statement:

“The enormous social, emotional and financial impacts of the coronavirus have impacted us all, and the sports and entertainment industry continues to be severely affected. Due to the ongoing uncertainty and its unknown duration, today we felt it necessary to make a number of very difficult staffing decisions across our business units. For nearly three decades, we have been proud to serve as a symbol of excellence with our employees and players actively taking the role of standard-bearers in the industry, and it's what makes a day like today so truly heartbreaking. An overwhelming majority of today's reductions were in the form of furloughs, and so it is with expectant anticipation that upon moving beyond this terrible pandemic we will have the opportunity to welcome back most of our highly valued team members.”

This is unfortunate news, but not shocking, as many teams have been forced to layoff staff due to the pandemic. One hopes that a 2020-21 season can soon start in order to get some people back to work, but that remains unknown at this point. The one positive from this is the distinct majority of these layoffs are only furloughs.
