Wiebe points out that Laine is currently making $6.75 million per season on a contract that runs out at the end of 2020-21. With 138 goals and 247 points in 305 NHL games, Laine will be commanding a big raise when his current contract runs out, one with a price tag that might be tough for the Jets to swallow.
The Kraken, of course, will take part in the expansion draft before officially joining the league. If GM Ron Francis could swing a deal with Winnipeg at that time to acquire Laine, he would have a player the team could be built around. Laine could be Seattle's franchise player and the face of the team, something for fans of the new club to get excited about.
All of this is pure speculation at this point, but it really does sound doable. Laine has never really seemed all that happy in Winnipeg and has complained numerous times about not getting shifts on the Jets' top line. He would have no trouble getting plenty of top line minutes in Seattle.
