BREAKING: Calgary Flames Finally Extend Potential Future Captain

The Calgary Flames have had an eventful offseason. Their General Manager and Head Coach were both replaced after rumblings of poor relationships with players. Now a centerpiece of the team has finally gotten an extension.

A new report from Chris Johnston has confirmed that the Calgary Flames and Mikael Backlund are on the verge of finalizing a contract extension.





Barring a last-minute snag in the details it sounds as though Backlund will continue to play for the Flames. He will be entering his 16th season in the NHL all of which have been spent with the Flames.

Backlund has also been very vocal about wanting to be the captain of the Calgary Flames. He has been loyal to the organization and has shown that he has what it takes to lead an organization.

Many believed his lack of a long-term contract and his age would prohibit him from being considered. Now with a new contract, he becomes the front-runner to become the Flames' next captain.

It will be interesting to see if captaincy is announced with his official extension or if it will have to wait until a later time. For now, though Backlund will securely be with the Calgary Flames going forward.
