The Canadiens have been busy this offseason, pushing out salaries that they don't think will serve them in the long term. Rumours are emerging Price could be next.
Price being Shopped?
Rumours have emerged that the Canadiens could be shopping Price's contract, according to insiders and Habs GM Kent Hughes.
Carey Price has three years left on his contract at a $10.5 million cap hit. Most of the owed to him is covered under insurance, but it's not easy to move that contract.
«I think there's always a possibility to do things,» Hughes said. «I don't know what that looks like, and I don't know ultimately if that ever happens, but I certainly wouldn't describe it as an impossibility.» - Kent Hughes
Hughes is clearly leaving the door open to a potential trade if need be with these statements. While he acknowledges the difficulty, he is certainly hinting that a move could be made if the price was right.
If the Price is Right
Price has 3 years left on his contract, at a $10.5 million AAV. The Canadiens are definitely in a rebuilding era, and Price did not play last season due to an ongoing, long-term knee injury, and doesn't have a solid plan yet to return to the NHL.
What's even more, the Habs have a plethora of options in net this season, between their duo of
Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault, and newly acquired
Casey DeSmith. Their options are almost too much for the club.
