The Philadelphia Flyers took a major chance on Russian prospect Matvei Michkov in the 2023 NHL Draft, and already his time in the KHL has proven to be a whirlwind.
A major demotion

After a hot start to the pre-season for SKA St. Petersburg, Michkov was demoted to playing just 8 minutes two games ago, five minutes in his last game, and now, things have gotten worse for him.
The 18-year old has now officially been benched for his latest game, and after some promising shifts on the ice, there must be something going on behind the scenes to have his time go like this.

Untapped potential
In 43 games at the KHL level thus far in his career, Michkov has 11 goals and 25 points, and with plenty of time to learn and grow, it was always a good pick for the Flyers at No. 7 overall.
Unfortunately for them, the biggest risk was always their inability to control his development, and now, it appears he's going to have to ride the wave of his early career as he looks to make it to the NHL one day.
