Tampa Bay has been trying to keep their core pieces together and offered Alex Killorn a max term deal to try and keep him in Tampa.

Tampa's Crazy Contract Offer To Killorn

Of all of the free agents that went on the market on July 1st, Alex Killorn was the one coming off the best season having scored 64 points in 2022-23.

Killorn was a staple in the Bolts line up since 2012 and has played over 800 total games with the Lightning.

In an attempt to keep Killorn around, the Lightning offered him an 8 year deal which would have paid him till he was 41.

This reported offer would have paid Killorn $20 million in a tax free state like Florida which would have maximized his career earnings.

However, he opted to sign with the Anaheim Ducks for $25 million over 4 years. California teams are some of the most heavily taxed teams in the NHL which means the total value from this contract may be less than what Tampa offered after taxes.

Unless Killorn believes he can sign one final contract at 37 years old, this move may age very poorly for him despite getting paid a very high amount. He could have also been worried about a potential buyout in Tampa which would have cut his total earnings by a fair portion.
