Reports are coming in that Auston Matthews is on the fence about signing a new contract in Toronto and will wait till later to sign if he does.
Matthews Holds Off on Committing to New Contract with Toronto Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a lot of their future undecided but one thing they surely want is to have Auston Matthews on the team for the rest of his career.
With Matthews having a close relationship with former GM Kyle Dubas, some are unsure if he will resign or not. This obviously makes sense that the firing has halted the negotiations a tad.
Next season, Matthews is eligible to walk in free agency if the Leafs do not sign him so the number one priority this off-season and next season is getting Matthews to resign.
Leafs insider Luke Fox commented the following on the plan with Matthews.
"Until Matthews feels comfortable with the plan, he probably won't be putting pen to paper."
This plan in question is the Leafs plan for the future. Brendan Shanahan has already confirmed that the core four will be sticking around next year but Matthews will want to be certain that the team wants to contend for his entire time in Toronto.

With the ball completely in Matthews' court, he will make sure that the circumstances accommodate to what he needs so that he is able to win and continue to be the face of the NHL.
