So far in the 2022-23 NHL season, we have witnessed several gruesome skate lacerations, with varying degrees of severity. Oilers F
Evander Kane missed more than three months
after a laceration to his wrist. Predators F
Ryan Johansen is
done for the season. Stars F
Tyler Seguin still hasn't returned from
his laceration suffered last week.
This has become a serious problem for the NHL. At the risk of stating the obvious, skates have always been sharp, so this isn't necessarily a new concern. However, with the rate at which these incidents occur increasing, the NHL needs to take action.
NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly recently expressed the NHL's desire to mandate cut-resistant equipment for all incoming players. Similar to the league's approach to visors, the concept of mandatory cut-resistant clothing would most likely be grandfathered in; mandatory for incoming players but optional for tenured players.
