Emily Cave, the wife of the late Colby Cave, is hoping to inspire the Edmonton Oilers as they get ready to begin the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Colby, who had been a member of the Oilers organization for the past two seasons, passed away in April after suffering a brain bleed. Due to COVID-19, Emily isn't able to interact with the Oilers in person, but she is planning on having a surprise gift and a letter left in each of their stalls next week.

“Only Connor [McDavid] and Dave [Tippett] know what it's going to be. It's nothing big or anything like that. It's just something special they can keep in their stall or that they can wear every day,” said Emily.

“I think they'll all enjoy it. Hopefully, they'll all post about it and then you'll all know.”

Emily says the gift is to thank the players for all of their support and to let them know that she knows Colby is proud of them.

On Saturday, the Oilers will resume training camp with the Colby Cave Memorial Fund Scrimmage. Each player will wear No. 12 in honour of Colby. Later on, these jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to the fund. The fund will go to community programs with an emphasis on mental health initiatives and providing access to sports for underprivileged children.
