St. Louis Blues defenceman and captain Alex Pietrangelo is hoping to sign an extension to remain a member of the team after the upcoming playoffs.

The 30-year-old defenceman is set to become a free agent as his seven-year, $45.5 million contract will expire after this year's post season.

“Not much to say about it other than the same thing [general manager Doug Armstrong] said,” said Pietrangelo. “The goal is to get something done. That's been the goal since the beginning. We'll see where things go. [The] focus right now is to get through this thing healthy and playing. We'll see where things end up.”

Pietrangelo is regarded as one of the NHL's elite defenceman, and played as such again during the 2019-20 season with 16 goals and 52 points in 70 games. It was the fourth time in his ten-year NHL career that he has broken the 50-point mark. The King City, Ontario native has been a member of the Blues organization since he was selected fourth overall at the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Thanks in large part to Pietrangelo's elite play this season, the Blues finished first place in the Central Division with a record of 42-19-10 for 94 points. Once the playoffs begin, the Blues, along with the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, and Vegas Golden Knights will play each other once in a scheduled round-robin (three games for each team) in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers in order to determine the seeding for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They will look to build off of last season's success, when they won their first ever Stanley Cup in franchise history.
