After a dominant '21-22 campaign, the Calgary Flames have lost the panache which carried them to the Western Conference Semi-Finals. It's no secret that the departure of forwards
Johnny Gaudreau and
Matthew Tkachuk have at least
something to do with it, but there is perhaps more to the story.
According to Frank Seravalli, a rift is growing between the Flames head coach Darryl Sutter and GM Brad Treliving.
The origin of this rift is unclear and somewhat surprising (although, not entirely). For one thing, Sutter signed a two-year contract extension through 2024-25, which makes things interesting to say the least.
Sutter has hinted on more than one occasion that the Flames' roster isn't good enough; usually his sentiment is expressed by way of complimenting other teams' rosters. Some could take his words as a slight to his GM, but that would be just conjecture.
Regardless, Seravalli believes there is something going on between coach and GM. As one of the NHL's most reliable insiders, that report carries a certain weight to it.
