That profile is the whole point for Toronto. The Leafs are an aging, expensive group, and cheap young talent is the glaring gap on the roster.
John Chayka has been reshaping things aggressively, and getting younger is the thread running through it. Bourque checks that box perfectly.
The mechanism fits, too. If Toronto moves a bigger piece, with the Matthew Knies talk lingering, adding a cost-controlled forward who grows with the roster is the smart pivot.
Bourque is precisely the type Toronto should target as it tries to get younger and cheaper around its core.
A productive 24-year-old at under a million dollars is the opposite of the contracts weighing the Leafs down. That's value Chayka should chase.
So it all starts with Dallas and Robertson. If that extension squeezes the cap and Bourque shakes loose, Toronto should be among the first calls.
The Stars set the timeline. But a young, cheap forward like Bourque is exactly what a reshaping Leafs roster is missing.
