The Montreal Canadiens will have several big decisions to make over the next few months, but none bigger than signing star forward Cole Caufield to a contract extension.

Caufield, 22, is set to become a restricted free agent on July 1st, but according to TSN's Darren Dreger, the Canadiens and the sniper's camp have begun preliminary talks on a contract extension.

"Meanwhile guys, my understanding is that the preliminary talks of an extension between Cole Caufield's agent, Pat Brisson, and the Montreal Canadiens started roughly a month ago. Again, preliminary talks, but you have to believe that Caufield given how he's played this year on his torrid scoring pace is a big part of the future of the Montreal Canadiens. So, they will work in earnest moving forward." Dreger said on Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading on TSN.

The Stevens Point (Wisconsin) native came into Thursday's game against the Winnipeg Jets as the Canadiens' leading scorer, while sitting second in points behind Nick Suzuki. In 44 games, Caufield has 36 points (26 goals, ten assists), no penalty minutes and is a minus-nine.
