Ed Olczyk interviews for job with New Jersey Devils

Former NHLer, turned coach and now hockey analyst Ed Olczyk has reportedly interviewed for a position with the New Jersey Devils. The 53-year-old, who serves as a television color commentator for NHL on NBC and Chicago Blackhawks games on NBC Sports Chicago, took part in an interview for the job of general manager with the Devils according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman in his latest "31 Thoughts" article. Here's what Friedman had to say:

New Jersey is continuing conversations around its GM position. (It's also possible the position is called “Chief Operating Officer.”) Incumbent Tom Fitzgerald remains a candidate. According to a couple of sources, one of the interviewees was NBC/Blackhawks broadcaster Ed Olczyk. Asked via text if he'd spoken to the Devils, Olczyk replied, “I speak to a lot of people in the NHL.”

Fitzgerald, who played over 1000 games in the NHL, was named interim GM in New Jersey in January of this year after Ray Shero was fired. However, the team has not yet named a permanent replacement.

Olczyk played 1031 games in the NHL that included two separate stints with the Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets, as well as time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers and the L.A. Kings. He won a Stanley Cup with the Rangers in 1994. After retiring following the 1999-00 season, the former third overall pick in 1984 got into broadcasting. However, he was named head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2003, but was fired in December of 2005 after the Pens got off to a disappointing start. He returned to hockey broadcasting for the 2006-07 season and has been there ever since.

New Jersey is also rumoured to have interviewed former Vancouver GM Mike Gillis for the postion, as well as Olczyk's fellow NBC hockey broadcaster Pierre McGuire.
