After signing with the Columbus Blue Jackets this offseason, many people have wondered what caused the negotiations with the Calgary Flames to fall through. Now, Gaudreau's parents have shed some light on what caused the talented forward's departure from Calgary.
"The summer before, had they offered him a contract even remotely close, (Johnny) said, 'I would have been in Calgary for eight more years, this would have been a non-issue.' Well, the Flames offered him a contract...It wasn't even close (to his market value)... It was a joke. He was really, really embarrassed."
According to his parents, Johnny never wanted to leave Calgary, but the team apparently forced his hand. In fact, Gaudreau didn't decide to test free agency until the night of, and didn't rule out a return during the free agency frenzy.
It's perplexing to think that the Flames offered their former star player a deal that embarrassed him, which makes one wonder if Calgary's management is not the best at negotiating contracts or keeping their players happy.
