Habs owner Geoff Molson comments on hiring Damphousse, his GM and honouring Markov

Despite rumours from Journal de Montreal reporter Rejean Tremblay, Habs owner and President Geoff Molson says the team will not be hiring a President of Hockey Operations. Tremblay recently speculated that Molson would bring in former Montreal Canadiens captain Vincent Damphousse to fill the role. However, Molson told reporters Wednesday that's not the case and he has no plans in making any changes to the front office staff.

Molson also took the time to reiterate his support for Montreal GM Marc Bergevin, calling him one of the most experienced and respected general managers in the league. Many Habs fans feel differently, noting that Bergevin is in his seventh season as GM and has not really improved the team. Not only have the Canadiens not made it to the Stanley Cup Final under Bergevin's tenure, the team was about to miss the playoffs for the third season in a row before the NHL suspended play on March 12th. While they weren't mathematically eliminated, it would have taken a miracle to get into the post season. Now, the team has a chance to get into the playoffs under the NHL's 24-team Return to Play format.

"Our commitment to winning has never slipped," Molson told reporters Wednesday.

“I never give up hope. Is this team built to win the Stanley Cup? I don't think so, but anything can happen in the playoffs.“

On a different note, Molson did tells reporters that the team will find a way to honour defenceman Andrei Markov at the Bell Centre soon. Markov played 990 games in the NHL, everyone of them with the Habs, before leaving for the KHL in 2017. He attempted a comeback, but could not find an NHL team to sign him. He has since officially retired from professional hockey.
