Surprise Eastern Conference team reportedly a 'dark horse' for Jakob Chychrun

Arizona Coyotes defenceman Jakob Chychrun returned to the team's lineup this past week after being out for the first 16 games of the season due to wrist surgery he had in the summer.

Through three games, Chychrun has three points (one goal, two assists), two penalty minutes and is a plus-four.

It's been heavily rumoured for over a year now that Chychrun wants to leave the Coyotes and wishes to be traded as soon as possible. Teams in the past that have been reportedly interested include the Los Angeles Kings and Columbus Blue Jackets.

According to Sportsnet's Jeff Marek, one team to watch that could be a dark horse in the Chychrun sweepstakes is the Buffalo Sabres.

"So we're going to fire up the trade talk and you'll hear the likely candidates. We'll hear plenty about the Islanders and we'll hear about the Kings and we'll hear about the Columbus Blue Jackets. And we're starting to wonder as well about maybe a dark horse candidate in the Buffalo Sabres." Marek said.

He added, "Now, Kevyn Adams, the general manager, has always maintained 'we're sticking with youth and that's the way we're going'. But there is a feeling out there that you know, they run those big three, young defencemen and they are Mattias Samuelsson, Owen Power and Rasmus Dahlin, who's having a fantastic campaign. This is a team that doesn't need anymore prospects. They've identified their core, they've locked them up long term. They need to start to put together their team. Jakob Chychrun has this season and the next two seasons at $4.6 (million)."

Adding Chychrun would be huge for the Sabres, but it would cost a lot. The reported asking price for Chychrun is two first-round picks and other assets, likely prospects.
