The Coliseum, while beautiful in its own right, is one of the oldest arenas in the NHL. It's also one of the smallest, seating just over 13,000 fans.
The Islanders organization did initially attempt to relocate to Brooklyn's Barclay's Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets, but it was clear from puck drop the arena wasn't meant for hockey, being met with backlash from fans and players alike.
The organization recently broke ground on their new home, an arena under construction at Belmont Park, but were quickly shutdown amidst the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic.
Following the almost three month halt on production, dating back to early March, NY Governor Andrew Cuomo released some good news this past week. In addition to the governors decision to allow professional sports teams to open training camps, Cuomo also gave the green light for Belmont Park Arena construction to resume.
According to Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, phase one of construction is expected to get back underway as soon as possible.
Though the original plan to have the arena ready for the Islanders for the 21-22 season may be delayed, the organization is hopeful to be dropping the puck in their new arena as soon as possible.
