Peter DeBoer has coached the Florida Panthers, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks, and the Vegas Golden Knights. He told Darren Millard on the podcast, The Chirp, “[Vegas is] the most talented team I've had in my coaching career. It seems like a great combination of talent and character and leadership.”

DeBoer was hired by the Sharks in May 2015 and led them to the Stanley Cup Finals that year. In the 2018-19 season he coached the team as they lost six games in the conference final to the St. Louis Blues. The Sharks fired him on December 11, but he was hired by the Golden Knights just a few weeks later and replaced Gerard Gallant.

The Golden Knights are a division rival of the Sharks, a fact that was not overlooked by DeBoer. “I got the Vegas job,” he said, “and had to address a group of men who hated my guts for the last three years.”

Before the coronavirus pause, the Golden Knights won eight games in a row between February 13 and 28.

“I'm a big believer that everything that happens in hockey happens for a reason,” DeBoer said. “One door closing, the way my career has gone, another door opens with a better opportunity.”
