This is brutal news for Kase, who is really adding to his total number of concussions. After two or three, studies show a serious increase in the affects on cognitive function. Some attribute repeated head injury to a higher than normal chance of neurodegenerative disease later in life.
CTE is one of the largest concerns on this subject, and -- per the CDC -- it cannot be diagnosed until after death. Kase's future has to be his number one priority, and while financial freedom is great; having full function in your brain is a special blessing.
It would really suck to see yet another athlete 'battle' his way through this terrible injury, only to add another tick in the CTE column.
That said, the Hurricanes will likely take this process day-by-day, without jumping to conclusions. Which is wise, but so many concussions do not warrant an M.D. to pose the right questions.
