Major League Baseball is reportedly partnering with the Sports Medicine Research and Testing Lab in Utah to provide extensive COVID-19 testing for its players and employees, according to Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated on Thursday.

It is the same lab that runs the MLB's performance-enhancing drug program.

According to Verducci, in addition to providing tests to over 3,000 players and support staff, the lab would also test thousands of members of the general public.

The league apparently wants a plan in place as soon as possible for an abbreviated 82-game season that would start in July to avoid pushing a postseason too far into November. There is still some concern that a second wave of the virus could threaten the postseason in that scenario.

The testing protocols were a part of the proposal the MLB delivered to its players' union Tuesday by video conference. A full report is expected to be submitted to the players this week.

The MLB intends to perform frequent testing in any return-to-play scenario while also implementing physical distancing protocols.
